After the World Social Forum in Dakar, radio WORT U.S. provided equipment for a community radio to the delegation of Mali-Indymedia. Sphinx and Nicole were designated to accompany the delegation of Mali to host a workshop for assembling the radio station. Here's the story of the journey Nicole shared upon her return to Dakar

On February 15, 2011 at 5 o'clock in the morning, Indymedia-Mali left Dakar for Bamako by bus. We spent the night at the border between Mali and Senegal.

17 February 2011 at 5:00 p.m, there was a meeting of different groups and associations involved in the management of the radio at Madou’s place. There was a discussion about where the radio will be installed and managed for the benefit of the community. It was decided to install the radio in Koulikoro, a town about 50 km from Bamako, where many workers have been unemployed since the privatization in 1998 of the main oil factory of the region. Currently women plunge into the river to extract sand that they sell to feed their families. Indymedia thinks a radio may help inform more about the living conditions of this community.

On February 18, 2011, Indymedia-Mali delegation accompanied by Sphinx and Nicole went to Koulikoro to find a site to host the radio. They agreed to discuss later on its location and technical management.

On February 19, 2011 at 6 pm, there was a meeting at the headquarters of the CAD (Coalition des Associations des Alternatives Africains Dette et Developpement) for a workshop on how to assemble the radio. Sphinx was explaining in English, Nicole translating in French, and several others helped with translating for the participants in Bambara.

After the theoretical explanation, Sphinx proceeded to the installation of the radio. In the end, they were able to broadcast on frequency 90.0. All the participants were surprised and excited, and others ran with their radio to know from what distance they can listen to the station. All the participants from different groups decided to organize themselves for the proper management of the radio of the voiceless.

On February 20, 2011, Sphinx and Nicole returned to Dakar. At night, they had a meeting with the groups that want to create Indymedia-Senegal. The night before her departure, Nicole told me about her journey from Bamako. She claimed to be impressed with the hospitality of the Malian people and thought the radio could help Indymedia-Mali.

On February 21, 2011 at 2 AM, departure of Nicole for the USA.
Sphinx leaves on February 24, 2011.
